The United States has filed a civil complaint in the Northern District of Texas to seek forfeiture of more than $1.7 million worth of cryptocurrency that was seized by the Dallas FBI in April 2025, according to an announcement from Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Nancy E. Larson.

According to details in the complaint, authorities seized 20.2891382 Bitcoin from a specific cryptocurrency address on April 15, 2025. The value of the seized cryptocurrency has since increased to over $2.4 million. Officials allege that these funds are connected to unlawful activities, including money laundering and extortion linked to ransomware attacks targeting protected computers.

Investigators traced the cryptocurrency to an address allegedly controlled by a member of the Chaos ransomware group, known as “Hors.” This group is suspected of carrying out ransomware attacks against victims both within the Northern District of Texas and in other locations.

“The seized cryptocurrency, now valued at over $2.4 million, allegedly constitutes property involved in unlawful activity, or proceeds of or property derived from unlawful activity, including money laundering and extortion related to damage to a protected computer, commonly referred to as a ransomware attack. The seized cryptocurrency was traced to a cryptocurrency address allegedly associated with a member of the Chaos ransomware group, known as ‘Hors,’ which has been tied to ransomware attacks against victims located in the Northern District of Texas and elsewhere,” according to the official statement.

The case is being prosecuted under Case No. 3:25-CV-01920-K.
