A significant legal development occurred in the Southern District of Texas as U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei announced the filing of 204 new cases related to immigration and border security offenses between June 13-19, 2025. Among these, 65 individuals are facing charges for illegally reentering the United States, with many having prior felony convictions involving narcotics and violent crimes.
Additionally, five cases involve human smuggling allegations, while others include various immigration-related crimes and assaults on officers. Notably charged individuals include Adrian Alberto Castillo-Contador and Lorenzo Ramirez. Castillo-Contador allegedly attempted to evade a Customs and Border Protection officer at the Hidalgo port of entry, resulting in injury to the officer before his apprehension. Ramirez was reportedly involved in a failed smuggling event near Weslaco, leading to a confrontation with Border Patrol agents where he allegedly assaulted them.
The week also saw several complaints against previous felons who had reentered the U.S. illegally. Mexican nationals Ivan Edgar Martinez, Carlos Bartolo Santiago-Hernandez, and Hugo Jimenez-Castillo were all found in the Rio Grande Valley despite previous removals from the country. They face potential sentences of up to 20 years if convicted.
Law enforcement efforts extended beyond immigration issues as nearly two dozen people were charged in connection with a large drug and money laundering operation. These indictments resulted from investigations under Operation Red Ranger, Borrowed Time, and Resurrection, which uncovered trafficking activities involving cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, firearms offenses, and money laundering.
In Laredo, cartel firearms traffickers Jorge Alberto Morales-Calvo and Homero Arteaga Jr. received federal prison sentences for their involvement in attempting to smuggle weapons across the border to deliver them to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Additional cases included Noel Mercado’s conviction for transporting illegal aliens using concealed methods such as wheel wells and fuel tanks; Braulio Ivan Rueda’s sentencing following a high-speed chase after picking up undocumented immigrants; Anthony Jacob Garza’s arrest for harboring illegal aliens under a blanket in his vehicle; Abelino Hernandez-Torres’s sentence for illegal reentry after multiple deportations; and Hector Ruben Cardenas-Morales’s sentencing for repeated illegal entries into the U.S., culminating in aggravated assault charges.
These arrests are part of Operation Take Back America—a Department of Justice initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations—while enhancing public safety through cooperation among federal law enforcement agencies like ICE – Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), ICE – Enforcement Removal Operations (ERO), CBP, BP alongside state/local partners.
