The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas announced on Mar. 9 that it is seeking applicants for a full-time United States magistrate judge position in its Beaumont division.
This appointment is significant as the court emphasizes the importance of diversity within the judicial system, stating that public confidence in justice increases when courts reflect the community’s racial, ethnic, and gender diversity.
According to the announcement, the magistrate judge will handle a range of duties including preliminary proceedings in criminal cases, trial and disposition of misdemeanor cases, various pretrial matters delegated by district judges, and civil case trials upon consent from litigants. The authority for these responsibilities is outlined under 28 U.S.C. § 636.
Applicants must have at least five years of active legal practice and be members in good standing with the bar of their highest court. Additional requirements include being competent to perform all duties, possessing good moral character, emotional stability, commitment to equal justice under law, good health, patience and courtesy, decisiveness, being under seventy years old, and not being related to any district court judge.
A merit selection panel made up of attorneys and community members will review applications confidentially before recommending five candidates to district judges. The final appointee will undergo an FBI background check and IRS tax review. Compliance with financial disclosure rules under the Ethics in Government Act is also required. The annual salary for this eight-year term position is $229,908.
Interested individuals can obtain more information from David A. O’Toole, Clerk of Court. Applications must be submitted electronically by 5:00 p.m. CST on Friday, May 8, 2026; late or paper applications will not be considered. All application materials will remain confidential unless disclosure is permitted by the applicant.
