A federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Texas has indicted Antonio Oliveros-Montero, a 45-year-old Mexican national residing illegally in Henderson, Texas, for illegal reentry after deportation. The announcement was made by Jay R. Combs, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas.
According to the indictment, Oliveros-Montero was identified as a Mexican citizen and determined to be in the country unlawfully while held at the Rusk County Jail. Authorities allege he had previously been deported from the United States.
If convicted, Oliveros-Montero could face up to 10 years in federal prison followed by deportation.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide effort by the Department of Justice focused on addressing illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime perpetrators.
Homeland Security Investigations is conducting the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Noble is prosecuting the case.
“A federal indictment is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law,” according to the statement released by officials.
