A Mexican national residing illegally in Hallsville, Texas, has been indicted for returning to the United States after multiple deportations. The announcement was made by Jay R. Combs, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas.

Jorge Martinez-Abundis, 38, was named in an indictment returned by a federal grand jury this week in the Eastern District of Texas charging him with illegal reentry by a previously deported alien.

The indictment states that Martinez-Abundis was found in the Eastern District of Texas on February 14, 2025, after having been deported at least four times before.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative led by the Department of Justice that aims to address illegal immigration and combat transnational criminal organizations. According to the Department of Justice, Operation Take Back America brings together resources from Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) to target violent crime and organized criminal activity.

If convicted, Martinez-Abundis could face up to 20 years in federal prison and subsequent deportation.

Homeland Security Investigations is conducting the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Richards is prosecuting the case.

A federal indictment is not evidence of guilt.  All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
