A man from Bourg, Louisiana, has been sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a firearm in the Eastern District of Texas. The announcement was made by Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.

Brad Michael Broussard, aged 44, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. His sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Marcia A. Crone on July 1, 2025.

Court documents revealed that Broussard was stopped by law enforcement on January 1, 2024, in Shelby County after hitting several construction barrels while driving on the highway. During the traffic stop, officers detected the smell of marijuana, which led to a search of his vehicle. The search uncovered four firearms, including a pistol with a homemade silencer. Additionally, Broussard had hallucinogenic mushrooms, marijuana, prescription pills, a methamphetamine pipe, and other drug paraphernalia in his possession.

Further investigation showed that Broussard had five felony convictions for burglary. Under federal law, individuals with felony convictions are prohibited from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition.

This case is part of Operation Take Back America—a nationwide initiative by the Department of Justice aimed at combating illegal immigration and eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs). It also seeks to protect communities from violent crime through coordinated efforts involving the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).

The Texas Department of Public Safety and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald S. Carter prosecuted it.
