Jolie Stewart, a former peace officer with the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office, has filed a lawsuit against Kaufman County and Sheriff Bryan Beavers. The suit, filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, alleges unlawful race discrimination, retaliation, and infringement on her First Amendment rights following her support of an African-American colleague’s racial discrimination complaint. Stewart claims that after voicing her support for Janet Freeman’s complaint regarding racially motivated promotion denial, she faced ostracism and eventual termination from her position. The lawsuit seeks damages for lost wages, mental anguish, and punitive damages under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and 42 U.S.C. § 1983.
