A Beaumont woman has been charged with federal tax return fraud in the Eastern District of Texas, according to an April 28 announcement by U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.
Chrysantha Wilson was indicted by a federal grand jury on 40 counts of assisting in the preparation of fraudulent federal tax returns. Wilson appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Christine L. Stetson for her initial appearance and arraignment on April 28.
If convicted, Wilson faces up to three years in federal prison for each count. The case is being investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Raynaldo P. Morin.
The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas prosecutes federal crimes and manages civil litigation across 43 counties in East Texas, supporting victims and witnesses while working with other agencies to enhance community safety, according to the official website at justice.gov. The office employs about 100 staff members, including roughly 50 assistant U.S. attorneys, with offices located in Beaumont, Lufkin, Plano, Sherman, Texarkana and Tyler according to the official website.
Combs said: “A federal indictment is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.” The office works as part of the United States Department of Justice according to its official website.
