James Maddison has filed a civil lawsuit against the Director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Tyler Division. The case revolves around an alleged breach of a plea agreement that Maddison claims has unlawfully extended his prison sentence. Originally sentenced to 30 years for robbery and escape charges, Maddison was released on parole after serving part of his sentence. However, he argues that upon returning to prison, his parole time was unjustly added back to his sentence, extending it beyond the agreed terms and violating ex post facto laws. Maddison is seeking injunctive relief to restore the original terms of his plea agreement and $5 million in damages for mental anguish and illegal restraint.
