A Jacksonville man has been indicted on a federal firearms charge in the Eastern District of Texas, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Jay R. Combs.
Cody Nerren, 34, was charged by a federal grand jury with being a felon in possession of a firearm. The indictment alleges that Nerren was found with a firearm in Cherokee County on April 24, 2025. Authorities say he had prior felony convictions and is prohibited from possessing firearms.
The case falls under Operation Take Back America, an initiative led by the Department of Justice aimed at addressing illegal immigration, dismantling cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and reducing violent crime. The operation brings together resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).
If convicted, Nerren could face up to 15 years in federal prison.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Homeland Security are investigating the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Noble is prosecuting.
“A federal indictment is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law,” according to the announcement.
