In a lawsuit filed in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas, three Black women and a minor child are suing Penney OpCo LLC, known as JC Penney, for racial discrimination. The plaintiffs, Atiya Jeffrey, Amirah Jeffrey, and Aiysha Jeffrey (acting on behalf of her daughter B.C.), allege that they were denied service at a JC Penney salon in Houston and were subjected to discriminatory pricing practices based on their race and hair texture. The complaint states that while attempting to avail themselves of a $10 advertised special for hair services, they were told by the salon manager that they would be charged additional fees due to their 4c textured hair. This treatment was not extended to white customers or those with different hair types. The plaintiffs seek compensation for damages under civil rights laws and claim violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
